What is a Quinceañera?

The original intention of the quince celebration was to indicate that the girl is ready for marriage. Today's celebration is more likely to be a sign that the girl has begun formal dating. Some girls choose to travel over a party, while others prefer to celebrate their 15th birthday the traditional way. Like many other ceremonies, Quinceañeras are constantly evolving.

Quinceañera, which means "15 years" in Spanish, is the celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday. This traditionally marks her transition into womanhood. You can also call it quinceaños or quince años. This term can also be used to refer to the celebrant. The quinceañera celebration can be both religious or social. It highlights the importance of family and society in a young lady's life. It is celebrated in Latin America, Mexico and the Caribbean as well as in Latino communities within the United States.

The quinceañera is thought to have been created from a mixture of Spanish culture (including Roman Catholicism) and native cultures of colonized Spaniards.

The celebration begins with a mass, which is attended by the girl and her family as well as her godparents. Following the mass, all family and friends are invited to a reception. The reception features food, music, and dancing. The "court" consists of damas ("maids, of honor") and chambelanes (“chamberlains”).

The girl might present her younger sister a doll in order to signify that she is moving on from her childhood. To signify her desire to be a woman, she may place heels on her feet. A choreographed, waltz dance is usually part of the dance portion. This traditional event is the highlight of the evening. Toasts are often given, and sometimes a fancy dessert can be cut as part of the celebration.

A fun party with family and friends is a great way to celebrate a young woman's Quinceaños. How can you make that celebration even more special?
